The Ultimate Guide to Tummy Tuck Surgery: Types, Recovery, Costs & Risks

Guide to Tummy Tuck Surgery

A
tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a common surgical procedure which is done to sculpt the lower abdomen area.

There are various types of abdominoplasty surgeries available. These are as follows:

  • The scarless and traditional abdominoplasty

This type of abdominoplasty procedure determines which incisions will be made and subsequently the amount of scarring which will result. If the purpose is to only some mild sculpting of the tummy a mini tummy tuck will suffice. When there are other objectives such as the removal of fat and loose skin and tightening muscles, a more invasive procedure such as the extended tummy tuck will be implemented.

  • Complete tummy tuck

The complete tummy tuck is the most common abdominoplasty procedure. The first and largest Incision is a partly horizontal straight line across the abdominal area between the hips going up to the hip bones. The location of the middle of the scar is just above the pubic bone. The second standard incision is a circular shaped cut around the naval.

  • Endoscopic tummy tuck

This is the least invasive tummy tuck procedure with minimal scarring which is only suitable for women who don’t need to have loose skin removed.

Cost of abdominoplasty procedure

The average cost of undergoing this procedure is $5,493. However, this amount may differ from country to country as well as the status and experience of the surgeon who will be performing this operation. However, the average fee which has been stated above does not include operating room facilities, anesthesia, or other related expenses. In addition, you should also check whether this surgery will be covered by your medical insurance company if something goes wrong.

Recovery

The recovery period can take any time from six weeks to twelve weeks. This is dependent on the extent of surgery which has been performed on you. During this recovery period, you need to take special care of yourself. A high protein diet needs to be adopted. This will not only ensure that you are getting all the necessary nutrients but also spur the healing process. Besides your diet, some light form of exercise also needs to be adopted. This is because stretching and aerobic exercises will ensure that your scars will be healed faster.

Other than that, smoking should also be avoided at all costs. This is for one month before the surgery and one month after the surgery. Other than that, you should make sure that no extra pressure is being exerted on you. Try to avoid lifting heavy weights or bending. This will put pressure on your scars which can result in bleeding or inflammations occurring.

Risks

Even though the tummy tuck surgery is considered to be quite a safe procedure, there are still risks associated like with every other surgery. These are as follows:

  • Poor healing of wound

  • Bleeding

  • Skin loss

  • Discoloration of skin

  • Pain which may persist

  • Swelling

  • Visible scar

Even though it is quite uncommon, this procedure may even result in death occurring if the surgery has not been performed properly.
