Parents' Guide to 'Deadpool & Wolverine': Is the New Marvel Movie Kid-Friendly?

Wolverine himself has admitted that what he does best isn't very nice. Keep this in mind if you're considering making "Deadpool & Wolverine" (in theaters Friday) a family movie night.

Over the past few decades, numerous Marvel Comics movies—from X-Men to the Avengers to Spider-Man—have captivated longtime fans and created new ones.

While you might be eager to see Hugh Jackman return as Wolverine or curious about Disney-owned Marvel's latest installment, incorporating franchises acquired from 20th Century Fox, don’t overlook the R rating.

Here's what parents need to know about Marvel's "Deadpool & Wolverine":

What is the new Deadpool movie about? "Deadpool & Wolverine," directed by Shawn Levy, is a sequel to "Deadpool" (2016) and "Deadpool 2" (2018). The film reunites Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) and Wolverine (Jackman) as they reluctantly team up to battle foes, seek redemption, and, amidst the action and humor, aim to save the world.

Why is 'Deadpool & Wolverine' rated R? The Motion Picture Association has rated "Deadpool & Wolverine" R for "strong bloody violence and language throughout, gore, and sexual references." This movie offers two hours and seven minutes of quips and heart, but also features severed limbs, brutal fights, crude jokes, sexual innuendo, and a plethora of f-bombs.

Given that the first two Deadpool movies were rated R, it's no surprise that this one is as well, even under Disney. Marvel president Kevin Feige confirmed to Deadline that the R rating was never in question: "We weren’t going to undo any of the great work Ryan had done in those first movies."

Is it OK to take kids to see 'Deadpool & Wolverine'? In short: no. As Wolverine might say, you picked the wrong movie, bub.

If you’ve seen the first two "Deadpool" films, you’ll know what to expect in terms of content and tone. If you haven't, it’s understandable why you might wonder if this movie is suitable for children or teens. It really isn’t. The film may be appropriate for supervised older teens, but parents should be ready for uncomfortable scenes and discussions about explicit and mature topics. Despite Disney now owning the "Deadpool" franchise, this sequel is not gentler or family-friendly. Within the first few minutes, there is blood and multiple crude jokes.

The movie contains scenes of brutal violence, drug abuse, casual suicidal ideation, and numerous conversations about masturbation and sex. So, no matter how much your kids love Marvel movies or superheroes, "Deadpool & Wolverine" is not suitable for children. The jokes will likely go over their heads, and some scenes may be confusing, disturbing, or frightening.
